Shakib Al Hasan’s Possible Return to Bangladesh Cricket

BCB Reconsiders Veteran All-Rounder

In a surprising move, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that Shakib Al Hasan may once again be considered for national team selection. This decision ends months of speculation about the future of one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers.

The announcement followed an eight-hour board meeting at the BCB headquarters in Mirpur. Media committee chairman Amzad Hossain confirmed that Shakib will be eligible for the upcoming home and away series if he meets requirements related to fitness, availability, and presence at match venues.

Franchise League Participation

The board also agreed to issue No Objection Certificates (NOCs), allowing Shakib to participate in global franchise leagues should he choose to do so.

Legal and Political Complexities

BCB officials revealed that Shakib has expressed his desire to return to international cricket and play both home and away series. However, they acknowledged that legal and political matters remain outside the board’s control.

Since the fall of the Awami League government in mid-2024, Shakib has faced multiple legal cases, including a murder allegation, which have prevented him from returning to Bangladesh. His last international match was in September 2024 in Kanpur, India. Plans for Protests and security concerns forced the abandonment of the farewell Test series against South Africa.

Central Contract Discussions

Shakib’s name resurfaced during routine reviews of central contracts, where player performance and availability are assessed. BCB directors voted to include him in a 27-player pool under consideration for contracts this year, signaling respect for his stature and contribution to Bangladesh cricket.

Officials emphasized that the decision was based purely on sporting merit, not political affiliation.

Conflicting Statements

The BCB’s position contrasts sharply with remarks made in late 2025 by former Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, who declared that Shakib would “never again” represent Bangladesh. While the board did not directly respond to those comments, it stressed that government clearance on legal and security matters will ultimately determine Shakib’s return.

What Lies Ahead

Shakib’s comeback depends not only on his fitness and form but also on negotiations between the BCB and government authorities. Fans and cricket officials are closely watching developments, as the future of one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricket icons remains uncertain.
